Expressive E instruments represent the cutting edge of MPE controller technology, offering musicians an unparalleled level of performance control through polyphonic aftertouch and advanced gestural synthesis capabilities. Each expressive keyboard controller in the Expressive E lineup responds to multiple dimensions of touch, allowing performers to shape every note individually with pressure, slide, and tilt movements. Whether you're exploring the innovative MPE synthesizer capabilities of the Osmose or seeking a powerful alternative to Roli Seaboard, Expressive E delivers studio-quality sound design tools with an intuitive, acoustic-like playing experience that bridges the gap between traditional keyboard technique and modern electronic expression. Perfect for producers, composers, and performing musicians who demand precise, dynamic control over every nuance of their sound.

Combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, Osmose is the result of more than 10 years of research and development, as well as feedback from world-class artists. Osmose introduces new physical gestures, allowing musicians to interact with sounds and produce music. It does this while not only respecting, but also enhancing the player's existing keyboard skills. Every note can be articulated independently with unique expressive possibilities.

The EaganMatrix Sound Engine

Offering new levels of expressivity required a seamless interaction between Osmose's unique keybed mechanism and its sound engine. Logically, Expressive E has partnered with Haken Audio to integrate its powerful EaganMatrix sound engine with Osmose. Its modular sound engine combines many types of digital synthesis (including physical modeling, FM, and more), making it a workflow-oriented soundbox. Osmose ships with more than 500 presets, and each of them has been manually customized with efficient macros that open new realms of sound exploration.

A Playful Playing Experience

All the internal sounds in Osmose's large library are tailor-made to take advantage of its unique keybed. Osmose's unique sound identity is a combination of highly detailed acoustic, electronic, and hybrid sounds that will easily add nuances and variations to any music genre. These sounds were carefully crafted to react to a player's slightest movements and make use of the keys' three-dimensional sensitivity in a unique way to create effects such as strummed notes, vibrato, legato, layered dynamics, and much more. As a result, discovering and controlling Osmose's sounds is refreshing and fun!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression)?

MPE is a protocol that allows each note on a keyboard to send independent pitch bend, pressure, and modulation data. Unlike traditional MIDI where one controller affects all notes, MPE lets you shape each note individually - perfect for expressive playing techniques like per-note vibrato, pitch slides, and dynamic articulation.

How does Osmose compare to Roli Seaboard?

While both are MPE controllers, Osmose offers traditional full-size keys (vs Seaboard's continuous keywave surface), making it easier for pianists to transition. Osmose includes a built-in professional sound engine (EaganMatrix) with 500+ presets, while Seaboard requires external software. Osmose's 3D keybed provides more nuanced control with vertical pressure, lateral movement, and aftertouch on every key.

Can I use Osmose as a MIDI controller with my DAW?

Yes! Osmose works in three modes: standalone synthesizer, MPE MIDI controller, and classic MIDI controller. It connects via USB or 5-pin MIDI and is compatible with all major DAWs including Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Cubase, Bitwig, and any MPE-compatible software like Arturia Pigments, U-He Zebra, and more.

What is the EaganMatrix sound engine?

EaganMatrix is a powerful modular synthesis engine developed by Haken Audio, combining physical modeling, FM synthesis, subtractive synthesis, and more. It's specifically optimized for expressive playing and comes with 500+ professionally designed presets that respond dynamically to Osmose's 3D keybed gestures.

Is Osmose good for beginners?

Osmose is excellent for players of all levels. If you have basic keyboard skills, you'll feel at home immediately - it uses standard full-size keys. The expressive features enhance rather than replace traditional technique, so you can start playing familiar music right away while gradually exploring the advanced gestural controls. The 500+ presets are designed to respond musically to natural playing movements.

Osmose vs Hydrasynth

While both offer polyphonic aftertouch, Hydrasynth focuses on traditional subtractive synthesis with wave morphing, whereas Osmose specializes in MPE performance with physical modeling and the EaganMatrix engine. Osmose's 3D keybed offers more expressive dimensions of control per note, making it ideal for acoustic instrument emulation and nuanced performance articulation.
