The SM-Series features a 3-way coincident architecture, combining the lifelike imaging of a coaxial speaker with the low distortion and midrange clarity of a 3-way speaker. Its midrange and tweeter are physically time-aligned and phase-coherent from all angles, resulting in a seamless transition and an engrossing stereo image with lifelike and crisp details. The SM-Series speakers are acoustic point sources and designed to deliver high performance for demanding mixing and mastering applications.
The low-diffraction baffle of the SM-Series follows the shape of the midrange driver, resulting in a seamless blend from the driver edge to the cabinet and eliminating diffraction artifacts in the frequency response. This reinforces the speaker's excellent imaging characteristics. The SM-5-C features a low-noise port tube, which utilizes fluid dynamics to ensure all the air leaves the tube at the same velocity, eliminating the "chuffing" noise caused by turbulence. This design provides a clean, tight, and detailed low-end response, without adding to the noise floor.
The SM-5-C speakers require a power amplifier with at least 100W per channel. Kali recommends using an LEA amplifier and bi-amplifying the speakers. The LEA Connect 164 160W per channel 4-channel amplifier is the minimum choice for a pair of SM-5-Cs. If using a different amplifier, it must deliver 20VRMS into a 3 Ohm load and include a peak limiter. Using the SM-5-Cs without a peak limiter will void the warranty. The SM-5-C loudspeaker has mounting holes on the top and bottom. Kali suggests using a Triad-Orbit U-bracket or any speaker mount with a 4.25 x 2-Inch bolt pattern that can hold the speaker's 21 lbs weight.
