Once described by the legendary Steve Vai, in a 2016 interview with Ultimate Guitar, as “the future of exceptional guitar playing,” Plini’s polymathic genre-transcending performances have earned him a well-deserved and ongoing collaboration with celebrated 6-string innovators Strandberg. The Boden Standard NX 6 Plini Edition Mirage marks the latest limited-edition iteration of his signature instrument, adding another entry to Plini’s penchant for the Boden series models. Crafted from a tonewood triumvirate of meranti, roasted maple, and Ebonol, Plini’s Boden Standard NX 6 boasts a striking finish with glow-in-the-dark details that are directly inspired by the artwork of his Mirage EP. However, this guitar is anything but a mirage in the desert of the real — it’s here, but only for a limited time, and our Guitar Shop can confirm it’s been well worth the wait, since its NAMM 2025 debut.
High-performance tonewoods from head(less) to heel
Would this truly be a Plini-edition take on Strandberg’s Boden Standard NX 6, without a few welcome curveballs? Beneath the Plini Edition Mirage’s phosphorescent finish, the 6-string’s tones are anchored to a meranti body. As a tonewood, meranti — sometimes known as Philippine mahogany — is prized for its stability and strength, exuding mahogany-like tonal characteristics that include shimmering harmonics, prismatic overtones, and robust mids, with an overall balance that offers ample dynamic range. The roasted maple neck coats your sound in a veneer of smoldering spectrum-spanning warmth, with a brilliant sheen and intrinsic note-separating articulation that ensures every note shines with distinction. Up top, the Ebonol fingerboard — a synthetic high-pressure laminate — gives you everything desired with ebony fretboards, in a sustainable platform that features a smooth glass-like tactility, which makes it a premium choice for instruments demanding power, precision, and near-limitless sustain.
Supercharged OEM sound, courtesy of Strandberg Custom
For the Boden Standard NX 6 Plini Edition Mirage, Strandberg and Plini opted to outfit this signature 6-string with the heavy-hitting haymakers only Strandberg Custom OEM humbuckers could provide. These pickups feature 53mm and 50mm spacing measurements, in their bridge- and neck-mounted iterations, respectively, fine-tuned to ensure the harmonic-rich sustain of these passive powerhouses is vividly voiced with voltaic vigor. Considering Plini’s discography spans myriad shades of jazz, fusion, post-rock, djent, progressive, and math-rock, it’s no wonder the multidimensional musicality of the Mirage led them to the ferociously flexible yet focused Strandberg Custom OEMs.
Engineered for prismatic performances and ceaseless precision
Plini’s polychromic playing and Strandberg’s penchant for outside-the-box approaches are a natural complement, endowing the Boden Standard NX 6 Plini Edition Mirage with Strandberg’s hallmark EndurNeck profile. Crafted from roasted maple and reinforced with carbon fiber, the neck sports a rear-shafted trapezoid shape that’s incredibly comfortable and noticeably stable. This design simultaneously relaxes your grip and maximizes control, thanks to its increased tactility and ergonomic support. While this naturally gives way to longer performances (and fewer injuries), the roasted maple’s dimensional stability reduces the likelihood of twisting or warping, with its natural strengthening properties augmented by the carbon fiber rods, reducing weight, mitigating neck-diving tendencies, and keeping you poised to perform at your best. And with a multi-scale 25–25.5-inch fingerboard adorned with 24 frets, the combined accessibility of the EndurNeck profile and deep double-cutaway design ensures no sonic stone is going unturned. Toss in the Strandberg EGS Rev 7b Tremolo, and diabolical dimension-warping whammy wizardry is yours to wield.
Strandberg: delectable headless workhorses for all players
If you've browsed the message boards or scrolled through pages of progressive guitar YouTube videos, odds are, you're fully aware of the awe-inspiring ingenuity that Strandberg guitars bring to the table. Founded by Swedish luthier Ola Strandberg, Strandberg serves as a direct response to the lack of mass-produced headless instruments with a heavy focus on ergonomics. Each Strandberg boasts a headless design that removes mass from the headstock for lower weight and improved balance, with custom lightweight aluminum bridge hardware contributing to the instrument's tone. The EndurNeck has been a calling card for Strandberg guitars since their inception — this carbon fiber-reinforced neck sports a rear-shafted trapezoid shape, possessing incredible comfort and noticeable stability. Multi-scale fingerboards with stainless steel frets are a standard feature on these stringed sports cars, allowing lower strings to intonate better at higher tension and making bending high notes a breeze.
