This is a very nice and rather clean example of a vintage 1930's Regal ERA "B&J Serenader" mandolin,..Also known as the "Tulip Headstock" mandolin. Very good overall condition for an almost 100 year old instrument with no cracks or past crack repairs of any kind. Missing its original metal tailpiece cover, but all of the oter parts are original to the instrument. Solid spruce top and what we believe to be solid Birch back, sides and neck. Original 4&4 cream baklite button - metal plate inclosed tuners and original carved ebony bridge. Fully restrung and ready to go! Plays great and sounds fantastic. Loud and bright with some nice toasty warm low-mids, and loads of vintage mandolin mojo. Sold without a case or bag.

Vintage B&J (Buegeleisen and Jacobson) Serenader mandolins were largely built in the 1920s and 1930s by USA Chicago-based makers like Regal, Kay and Harmony. These instruments are best known for their unique solid wood necks and bodies, bright tones, and flashy "mother-of-toilet-seat" (pearloid) fretboards. Much like this 1930's era Serenader we have here.

B&J (Buegeleisen and Jacobson) was a major New York City-based musical instrument distributor. However they did not build instruments themselves. Instead, they purchased mandolins from top builders and sold them under their own "Serenader" brand. Many of the "Serenader" mandolins—particularly the famous 1930s "tulip head" models, like this fine example we see here, were manufactured by the Regal Musical Instrument Company in Chicago, Illinios.
